Pause Watch History So YouTube Kids Stops Feeding Itself

Your child watches one video about trucks. Then the home screen is trucks. Then it's a slightly louder truck video, and then a channel you've never seen, all because of one afternoon.

That isn't a glitch. Google says views are used as signals for what the app recommends next. There's a parent switch that stops new views from feeding that loop, and it takes about a minute.

What "Pause watch history" does

Google's Help Center puts it in one line: you can stop new video views from being used as signals to recommend other videos. Pausing watch history also stops new views from being used as signals for Recommended videos and Watch it again.

Two words in that sentence matter: new and signals.

  • New: pausing works from now on. Google describes it as stopping new views from counting. It doesn't say pausing erases what the app already learned.
  • Signals: the app still shows recommendations. They just stop being shaped by what your child watches while the pause is on.

It's also a parent's switch. Google's table of who controls what lists Pause watch history as something a parent can change and a child can't.

Turn it on in the YouTube Kids app

  1. Tap Settings.
  2. Complete the multiplication problem or enter your custom passcode.
  3. Tap your child's profile and enter your parent account password.
  4. Switch Pause watch history on.

Or from YouTube's Family Center

  1. Sign in to the YouTube app with your linked parent account.
  2. Tap You in the bottom right-hand corner.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Family Center.
  5. Select your child's profile or account.
  6. Switch Pause watch history to on.

If your child uses YouTube Kids with their own supervised Google Account, Google says you can manage their YouTube Kids settings from Family Center or the Family Link app.

Pause or clear?

They're different tools, and it helps to know which one you're reaching for.

  • Pause watch history stops new views from steering Recommended videos and Watch it again. Google doesn't describe it as deleting anything.
  • Clear history is the separate control for clearing your child's watch and search history. In Family Center, select your child's profile or account, select Clear history, then CLEAR to save.

If the feed has already gone a bit truck-shaped, clearing is the tool Google describes for history that's already there; pausing is about what comes next. Many parents will want both, in that order.

There's a matching Pause search history setting too, for families who leave Search on. Google lists it as another parent-only control.

Why it's worth one minute

Recommendations are a loop. A view becomes a signal, the signal becomes a suggestion, and the suggestion becomes the next view. Pausing watch history breaks the first link. What your child watched this afternoon doesn't get to choose tomorrow's home screen.

It also connects to Autoplay. Google says that when Autoplay is on, the app plays another related video based on your child's viewing history. For a child account, Autoplay is off by default, and you can lock it off with Disable autoplay in Family Center: the full walkthrough is in Disable Autoplay First.

Then choose on purpose

A paused history keeps the app from choosing for your child. It doesn't choose for you either. That part is still yours.

So make one deliberate pick. Approve a single long story instead of a whole channel, as we laid out in Approve the Video, Not the Channel, or go further and turn search off as well: Turn Search Off on YouTube Kids, Then Approve One Long Sit. To end the sitting when the story does, add the timer: The YouTube Kids Timer Ends a Session: Fill It With One Long Story.

One chosen story, one quiet stretch, and nothing new feeding the loop while it plays.

Park one long story

HoloÁnima long watches are built for this kind of sit: meadow friends, try-fail-wow, human-written stories with AI-assisted animation. Pick one on purpose and let it run to the end.

The calm ask

Pause watch history so new views stop feeding Recommended videos and Watch it again. Clear first if the feed has already drifted. Then choose one long story yourself.

One switch. One story you picked. One quiet home screen.

Open YouTube Kids today, tap Settings, choose your child's profile, and switch Pause watch history on. Then let Stella fill the next sit.
