The YouTube Kids timer ends a session, not a day. Size it to one long story you approved, then let it finish.

The YouTube Kids Timer Ends a Session: Fill It With One Long Story

The timer goes off. The screen says "Time's up!" Your child looks at you, and you both know what comes next: "Can I have five more minutes?"

The YouTube Kids timer is good at one thing. It ends a sitting so you don't have to be the one who pulls the plug. It isn't a daily budget, and it doesn't pick what fills the minutes. Treat it as the closing bell for one session, then put one long story inside it.

What the timer actually does

Google's Help Center describes it plainly. The built-in timer lets parents limit screen time by telling kids when it's time to stop watching. It shows a friendly alert and stops the app when the session is over.

When the time runs out, your child sees a "Time's up!" notification and the app locks. Nothing plays until a parent unlocks it.

Set the timer

You set it from inside the YouTube Kids app:

  1. Tap Settings in the corner of your screen.
  2. Complete the multiplication problem or enter your custom passcode.
  3. Tap Set Timer.
  4. Use the slider bar or the plus and minus icons to set a time limit.
  5. Tap START TIMER.

Google's accessibility guide describes the plus and minus buttons as adding or subtracting one minute, so you can set it to the minute. Google doesn't list a minimum or maximum on these pages, so check the slider on your own device.

Why "session, not a day" matters

Here's the part that trips parents up. Google's own wording is about the session: the timer stops the app "when the session is over". The help page doesn't describe a daily allowance, a schedule, or a reset at midnight. It describes a timer you start, and a lock when it runs out.

In practice, that means:

  • It doesn't add up the day. Google doesn't say it counts minutes across the day. Plan as if each timer covers one sitting.
  • You start it each time. The documented flow is that you set it, it runs, and it ends. After it ends, you either exit the timer or start a new one.
  • Device behaviour isn't documented. Google doesn't say whether a timer on the tablet also applies on the TV or a phone. Don't count on it carrying over.

A true daily limit for the whole device is a different tool. This post sticks to what the Kids timer is documented to do.

When "Time's up!" appears

The lock is the point. Let it do the talking. To unlock the screen:

  1. Tap Settings in the corner of your screen.
  2. Complete the multiplication problem or enter your custom passcode.
  3. Tap EXIT TIMER to stop, or START TIMER to start a new one.

Starting a new one is how you "extend". Google doesn't document an add-five-minutes button. If you decide on more time, it's a fresh timer, chosen by you, not a negotiation with the app.

A small ritual helps: say the minutes out loud as you tap START TIMER. When the lock comes, it's the plan, not a surprise.

Fill the session with one story

A timer only decides when watching stops. It doesn't decide what plays in the meantime. Twenty minutes of quick clips and twenty minutes of one finished story feel very different when the lock lands.

So pair the timer with the switches we've covered before:

Then set the timer a few minutes longer than the story. Ideally, the story ends, the room goes quiet, and the "Time's up!" screen just confirms what already happened.

Park one long story

HoloÁnima long watches are built to fill one session: meadow friends, try-fail-wow, human-written stories with AI-assisted animation. Pick one, approve it as a single video, and set the timer to match.

The calm ask

Use the timer for what it is: the end of one session. Choose the story first, then set the minutes to fit it. When "Time's up!" appears, let the lock be the answer.

One timer. One story. One ending.

Open YouTube Kids today, tap Settings, then Set Timer. Pick the minutes for one long story, and let Stella or Pip fill them.
