Turn Search Off on YouTube Kids, Then Approve One Long Sit
Turn Search off for everyday browsing. For a real stretch of quiet, approve one long video. Then park one Stella sit.
Turn Search Off on YouTube Kids, Then Approve One Long Sit
The search bar is the door you didn’t mean to leave open. One tap on the magnifying glass, a word your child half-heard at school, and the afternoon picks its own path.
You can close that door in two moves. First, switch Search off on your child’s YouTube Kids profile so everyday browsing stays inside a smaller set. Then, when you want a real block of quiet, switch to Approve content yourself and approve one long story you chose on purpose.
Step 1: Switch Search off
Search is a profile setting, and a parent controls it. Google’s help pages list Search as one your child cannot change.
From the YouTube Kids app:
- Tap Settings in the corner of the screen.
- Complete the multiplication problem or enter your custom passcode.
- Select your child’s profile and enter your parent account password.
- Switch Search off.
From the YouTube app, signed in with your linked parent account: tap You, then Settings, then Family Center, select your child’s profile, and switch Search off.
What Search off actually does
Google’s wording is short. With Search turned off, your child can’t search for videos, and they’re limited to videos and channels verified by YouTube Kids.
That’s narrower, not sealed. Your child can still browse, just inside that verified set, and Google still says your child may find something you wouldn’t pick. If that happens, block it or report it.
One heads-up before you flip it: turning Search off clears the watch and search history for that profile, and resets Recommended videos and Watch it again. A fresh start is usually the point, but don’t be surprised when the favourites row is empty.
Search off suits ordinary days. A few minutes of browsing in a smaller pool, then the tablet goes down.
Step 2: For the long sit, approve one long video
Some afternoons call for a longer stretch: a sick day, a long car ride, a call you have to take. Browsing, even in a small pool, is the wrong shape for that. You want one finished story with a start and an end.
That’s what Approve content yourself is for. In this setting your child can only watch the collections, channels and videos you handpicked, and they can’t search for any videos. Search is already off while you’re in this mode.
You have to set it up in the YouTube Kids app itself, not in Family Center:
- Open YouTube Kids on your child’s device and select Settings.
- Complete the multiplication problem or enter your custom passcode.
- Select your child’s profile and enter your parent account password.
- Select Edit settings, then Approve content yourself.
- Read the Getting Started pop-up and tap Select.
- Tap a single long video, not the channel, to approve it.
- Tap Preview to see your child’s screen, then select Done.
To change the list later, tap Manage under the Approved content only setting. You can turn Approved content only off whenever you like from the same Settings.
Why one video and not a channel? We covered that in Approve the Video, Not the Channel. The short version is that a channel approval is a standing yes. For a planned long sit, the shelf should hold exactly what you planned.
Close the last gap: Autoplay
Search off closes one door. Approved content only shrinks the room. Neither one decides what plays when the story ends.
That’s the switch from Disable Autoplay First: in Family Center, select your child’s profile and turn on Disable autoplay. While it’s on, your child can’t turn Autoplay back on. We won’t repeat the full walkthrough here; that post has it.
And no, none of these settings is a Shorts switch for YouTube Kids. Google doesn’t offer one. We laid out where that limit actually lives in Teen Shorts Limit Exists — Not on YouTube Kids.
Park one long sit
HoloÁnima long watches are built for exactly this slot: meadow friends, try-fail-wow, human-written stories with AI-assisted animation. Approve one compilation as a single video and that’s all that lands, not whatever we post next.
