You heard the news. Parents can set a daily Shorts feed limit for a supervised teen on YouTube. Some families can even set that feed to zero. Take-a-break and bedtime reminders live in the same Time management tools. It sounds like the fix you wanted for the living-room tablet.
Then you open YouTube Kids and hunt for the same Shorts limit. It is not there.
That is not a hidden menu you missed. YouTube Kids is a different product from supervised YouTube on the main app. The teen Shorts tools sit with Family Center / Family Link on a supervised account. The Kids app has its own calm tools — and a different job.
Two products, two toolboxes
YouTube Kids is its own app: kid profiles, a parent passcode, age bands, and settings built for younger viewers. Supervised YouTube is regular YouTube under a parent-managed Google account. Older kids and teens get Time management there, including a daily Shorts feed limit and take-a-break or bedtime reminders.
Google’s family choices page treats them as separate paths. Mixing them creates false hope. A Shorts limit you set for a supervised teen does not appear as the same switch inside YouTube Kids. Phone Screen Time can pause or limit a whole app on the device, but that is still not YouTube’s Shorts feed limit living inside Kids.
If your viewer is meadow-age and you want a closed kid profile, stay in YouTube Kids on purpose. If you manage a supervised older child on main YouTube, use the Family Center toolbox that belongs there.
What the teen Shorts limit actually does
On a supervised account, parents can open Family Center, choose Time management, and set a daily Shorts feed limit. When the limit is reached, scrolling that Shorts feed stops for the rest of the day and resets in the morning. Where the product offers it, zero minutes turns that feed off for the day.
Take-a-break and bedtime reminders live in the same area for supervised teens. They are reminders: useful, not magic. Kids can dismiss them. Offline watches and casting do not always run the timer the way you expect. Check the current Help Center notes for your country before you treat any number as a hard wall.
On a regular signed-in YouTube account, a Shorts feed limit under Time management can also appear as a personal reminder — and it can be dismissed. That is not the same as a parent-enforced supervised limit. The feature exists. It is not a universal Off switch for every YouTube surface your family uses.
What still works on YouTube Kids
You cannot install the teen Shorts feed limit inside YouTube Kids. You can shrink the chaos with the Kids toolbox that already exists.
Approved Content Only turns the app into a shelf: only videos and channels you approved. Search turns off with that mode. Search off alone is a lighter step if you are not ready for a full whitelist. A timer in parent settings ends the session when you said it would. Say the plan out loud before play: one long story, then the timer. When it rings, close the app. Do not bargain with autoplay.
Pair those settings with a habit: speak one title, sit nearby for the first minutes, ask what happened in the middle, then put the device down. That is quiet screen time you chose — not a Shorts chain choosing for you.
We will not pretend Shorts are worthless or invent a secret Kids toggle that turns Shorts off forever. The claim is simpler: use the product you are actually in, and park a long sit when you want a finish line.
