Slow on the rock. First to notice.

Shelly is a tortoise with a pink bow who sits on her rock and watches. She does not shout. She whispers the rule the kid can keep: “Clean finger. Nothing. Soapy finger. FLEE.” “No soap. Sit. Soap. GO.”

She is patient science — the climb of water on paper, the wait before the wow. When the meadow circles the bowl, Shelly is still there, pink bow and all.
